Diaries, correspondence, miscellaneous. The collection included 13 bound diaries from 1848-49 to 1908. Other materials include six pieces of correspondence from his foreign mission days (1859-62) and his final years at Loa. Of interest is the "Sketch, or Summary Record," a diary-like volume maintained regularly from 1848 through 1906. It reveals on a daily basis, the character of life in rural South Central Utah as experienced by a dedicated churchman, farmer, and healer.

Elias Hicks Blackburn was born on September 17, 1827, in Bedford, Pennsylvania. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo in 1845 and experienced the Mormon exodus of 1846. He spent the next year aiding the families of the Mormon Battalion and in 1849 traveled to Provo, Utah, where he served as Provo's first bishop.
